Do I need a website?
Starting a business means a lot of work initially. You need to come up with your name, decide what products or services you are going to sell – the list goes on. But one of the most important things you need to do when starting a business is getting your own website.
There was a time when websites were only owned by the huge, worldwide companies. That time is past and if you’re in business and don’t have a website you’re only going to be left behind. A website says, “I’m a professional”, “I’m trustworthy”, and “I’ve spent time on this, I’m dedicated”. People without websites can look unprofessional and customers are less likely to trust them. If you’ve spent the time building or designing a website, it will show your customers that you care enough about your business to do this – meaning you’re more likely to be better at what you do.
You’ve come this far into business, so you’re definitely aware of your competition and what they do. Have a look at them again, do they have a website? The answer is probably yes. So why don’t you have one? You want to mirror the businesses in your industry that are succeeding – because they know how it’s done. And if the customer has to choose between your company and a company with a nicely designed, user-friendly website? Well, you know what you’d choose.
Think about the last time you bought a service or product. How did you choose where to purchase it? Was it online? Because we bet it was. With millions of people accessing the internet every day, of course you’re going to do a quick Google search before committing to buying anything. It takes no time at all, and you can get a quick glance at what companies do, the people who have used them before, and just a general feel of a business. Getting customers requires gaining a level of their trust and if you don’t have a website then it’s harder to gain their trust.
Many people running small businesses use Facebook instead of a website. And while Facebook is definitely a good marketing tool, it shouldn’t be your only presence online. It’s easy to forget, but not everyone has Facebook – so you’re missing out on potential clients right there! The other thing with Facebook is that it cannot be customised to suit you, so you’re left with a page that looks like every other businesses’ page. How are you supposed to stand out from the competition if everything looks the same? With your own website you can design it to look exactly how you want, reflecting the true spirit of your brand. You can also use your website to get your mission statement across in a way that reflects you and your company.
One of the other (many) positives about having your own website is that you get a domain name with it. And with a domain name often comes an email address. Now, we know you’ve probably already got an email address but this one will be personal to your business. And an email address that has the company name in is far more likely to appear more professional and – that all important issue – trustworthy.
